General Information

Programme Objectives

The international master's programme in Anglo-American Literature, Language and Culture provides advanced and in-depth subject-specific, linguistic and methodological skills that will enable students to pursue careers in academia, culture, politics and business.

The academic qualifications acquired in the bachelor's programme in the fields of literary studies, linguistics and cultural studies (to varying degrees) are to be further deepened and supplemented.
In the field of literary studies, the focus is on English-language literature from the British Isles and American literature.
In the field of linguistics, knowledge and insights into the development, structure and diversification of the English language from its beginnings to the present day are imparted.
In the field of cultural studies, the focus is on the history and culture of modern Anglophone North America and the British Isles (from the late 16th century to the present day).

This master’s programme welcomes a growing international student community, fostering cultural diversity and an enriching academic environment. Students from around the world are fully integrated into an international context that values multiple perspectives and intercultural exchange.

A unique feature of this programme, in comparison to similar international degrees at other universities, is the explicit integration of linguistics alongside literary and cultural studies. All courses and academic activities are conducted in English and no knowledge of German is required for admission or during your studies. However, international students can take advantage of our comprehensive language support services to learn German if they wish.
The programme encourages individual specialization. Students benefit from a diverse range of modules and research colloquia, where current theoretical developments and research projects in literature, linguistics, and cultural studies are discussed. In addition, language practice is an integral part of the curriculum, aiming to further develop English proficiency up to the C2 level.

Practical experience is a key element of this programme: an integrated internship bridges academic theory and practical application and prepares graduates for various careers, such as roles in museums, NGOs, educational organizations, and the broader cultural sector. There are no tuition fees (apart from the standard university registration contributions).

Close academic supervision and individual support ensure that each student receives guidance tailored to their academic interests and career aspirations.

Career Opportunities

In addition to qualifying students for professional practice, the master's programme is designed to enable them to pursue a subsequent doctorate in the field of English and American Studies. An internship offers students the opportunity to gain practical experience in conjunction with academic reflection.

Admission Requirements

Applicants for the MA Anglo-American Literature, Language and Culture must

• hold a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree in English and/or American Studies with at least 60  ECTS with a minimum grade of 2.5 or better according to the German academic grading scale

• provide proof of their proficiency in English at C1 level

Applicants must prove their English language proficiency by submitting one of the following internationally recognised language certificate attesting level C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Exclusively, the following proofs are accepted:

1. ESOL Examinations: C1 Advanced (CAE) with at least grade C;
2. TOEFL iBT with a minimum score of 95;
3. IELTS: minimum total band score of 6.5;
4. TELC C1;
5. UNIcert III

However, graduates (school leaving and/or university graduation certificates) from Australia, Ireland, Canada (excluding Quebec), New Zealand, Singapure, the United Kingdom or USA are excluded to provide a language certificate.

Application

The admission to the M.A. Anglo-American Literature, Language and Culture is currently not restricted (no NC).

Required documents

The following documents must be submitted with the online application:

1. Proof of your bachelor's degree or equivalent (i.e., graduation certificate and transcripts). Important note: Applicants via uni-assist upload their certificates and transcripts both in original language and official translations, unless the originals are in English or in German.

2. Halle University does accept provisional graduation certificates, if your degree is scheduled after the application deadline. Please submit your transcripts indicating minimum 2/3 of your total credits to be passed / your senior student stage, accordingly. The final graduation certificate shall be submitted with enrolment, respectively by no later than 31 January in the year following admission.

3. Recognised proof of the proficiency in English language (see admission requirements)

Decisions on compliance with the admission requirements are taken by the selection committee.
